Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival
For the past few years, Taiwanese film-makers have been continuously producing high-quality films that have gained international attention. Unfortunately, Vancouver residents rarely have a chance to view these films. In order to increase local Vancouverites’ exposure to Taiwanese cinema and further appreciate Taiwanese culture and arts, UBCLE proudly presented the first Taiwanese Film Festival (TWFF) in April of 2007. The festival featured six award-winning films and documentaries from emerging directors of the 21th century that have revolutionized Taiwan’s film industry. Not only was TWFF the first large-scale Taiwanese film festival in Vancouver, but it was also the first large non-profit event in Canada that focused on promoting Taiwanese films.
Each year, the Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival has breakthroughs in box-office sales and increased media coverage. The festival continues to expand its exposure in major media outlets in Vancouver for both the English-speaking and Chinese-speaking community. With nine successful festivals to date, we at UBCLE have an even firmer belief in the initial purpose of TWFF – to build a bridge connecting the art of Taiwanese films to mainstream Canada.
October is here and Halloween cometh…are you prepared with your flashlights and your wits? Because you will need them to escape our unique escape rooms!
First hosted last year by UBCLE and UBCRC (Reality Club), l’Escape is a Halloween escape room event in which participants are locked in a room for 30 minutes to solve puzzles and mysteries. Each room has its own theme and is created and designed by a small team of our club members. The four rooms featured last year were: Haunted Classroom, Psycho Cinephile, Nevermore Banquet, and Amputation Gallery. Scheduled to return again this year, we hope to bring new and exciting games for you that will keep you guessing and escaping!
Each year, UBCLE hosts a photo studio where club members dress up and take photos in our custom-designed sets. Last year, we had three sets with three different interpretations of the theme Fictional Reality, they were: Alice in Wonderland, Modern Princess, and Dreamland. With carefully put together outfits, make-up, and props made by our members, each set produced a distinct and unique effect carefully captured by photography enthusiasts who came to visit us. We are hoping to revamp the event this year so that it is more hands-on for participants, so remember to look for us in February!
